It refers to the unfair, gendered expectations around how people “should” behave at a party. A woman who has had a few drinks is quickly labelled as irresponsible, embarrassing, or “losing her dignity.” Her behaviour is scrutinised, moralised, and often used against her. A man in the exact same state is treated very differently: he’s seen as funny, relaxed, entertaining — someone who’s simply having a good time. His behaviour is excused, even celebrated, as part of the social script of male looseness. This phrase exposes how dignity is not measured equally. It’s granted to one person and withdrawn from another, even when their actions are identical.
