This poster, titled "Meyera Raat Dakhal Koro" (Women, Reclaim the Night), is a visual representation of the ongoing protest in Kolkata and West Bengal, calling for justice and safety for women in light of the recent brutal rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. Written in both Bengali and English, it emphasizes the unrelenting demand for women's freedom to live without fear, especially at night, aligning with a larger protest movement against gender violence.
The imagery of a red hand and crescent moon symbolizes resistance and hope amid darkness, reflecting the protest's timing during India's Independence Day, signifying a new fight for women's independence and safety. The poster speaks to a broader frustration that societal and governmental systems have not evolved to protect women, despite earlier promises of reform following incidents like the Nirbhaya case.
This movement, "Women, Reclaim the Night," has resonated across communities, transcending political affiliations, with participants ranging from students to homemakers, determined to challenge the state's inaction. The protests are continuing throughout Kolkata, reflecting the deep anger and a united call for justice for all women.

Stop killing women
According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
