As I began conceptualizing this poster, my thoughts were drawn to one of the most fundamental rights that is stripped away from countless women each day: safety; or nowadays, unsafety! As a woman, I could not escape this thought of a pervasive threat that shadows too many lives. I could hear and feel the pain that numerous women endure daily while forced into actions they do not choose, bearing the physical toll of oppression and injustice and how it impacts them even physically. Thus, I thought to base my poster on defect that has been brought to a woman on her face as the most public and visible part of one’s body. Followed by how that little or big scar which she might try to hide holds stories of torment and injustice behind itself. Not only visibly on her skin but as well, deep into her soul, which led me to opt for my slogan “No scars, in or out”.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
