While the fist of the first hand symbolises resistance or the beginning of violence, the third hand in the middle making the middle finger sign can be seen as an expression of rebellion and defiance against the violence and oppression women are subjected to. This shows that there will be no silence and a strong reaction to violence. The last hand turning into a skeletal structure represents the most horrible consequence of violence, namely death. The strong reaction of the middle hand shows anger and intolerance against the cycle of violence and oppression against women. In this way, the poster expresses that violence against women is not just a passive problem, that women also take a strong stance against this violence and that a social uprising is necessary. The message ‘Stop Killing Women’ on the flowerpot reinforces this challenge and the call to stand up against violence: It says that a strong stance must be taken to end femicide and violence.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
