Surrounded by and wearing the names of murdered women from years past, the marble historic statues of Justice, Victory, Liberte and Freedom stand tall. Out of tragedy comes strength, we stand together with the values that women represent through stone, metal and marble to remember those we have lost and fight for a better future for the girls that follow behind us. This poster draws attention to the murdered women of the world. Names of women killed in recent years surround the poster. All the names are of women and girls murdered by men. I decided to use the statues as central figures as I wanted not just to speak of the horrors endured by women but also the strength. Instead of shocking through something violent and sad, although that is an important tool, I wanted to show the power of strength in the face of tragedy and injustice. We are surrounded by injustice but we do not break, we stand tall and strong as statues. We fight to see justice, victory, liberty and freedom for all women.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
