This is an artwork of rebellion and hope reflecting the mass revolution of the people, which is currently happening in Kolkata, India after a horrific incident of a monstrous rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor inside one of the biggest Government hospitals in the city. People of Kolkata are protesting throughout the night almost every day demanding for justice and making Indian cities safe for women - especially at night. The protests have spread like wildfire to every nook of the country and even internationally. Women are demanding justice against rape and murder and are reclaiming the night. In this poster I have tried to capture the emotion of the uproar and have used the headline in the local language, Bengali. The poster text translates into Reclaim the Night. The background of the poster is created with papermache of the current newspapers as a disruptive expression, with the colour Red dominating. Red is the colour of blood, violence, sexuality and anger. Ironically red is also the colour of sacrifice, courage, passion and love. If only we are willing to see, listen and bring urgent and necessary reforms can the society heal and bring justice to women.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
