This poster is inspired by the tragic real-life murder of Romina Ashrafi. In this piece, the scythe, which the father used to commit the murder, is depicted as a symbol of the Angel of Death. The form of the scythe in this poster is an exact representation of the one the father used, reinforcing the direct connection to the tragic event. In various cultures, the scythe is associated with death and the end of life, and here it plays a metaphorical role. One of the most disturbing images that went viral after the incident was a photograph showing Romina’s hair entangled and stuck to the scythe. This detail is reflected in my poster, where the hair wrapped around the scythe symbolizes the innocence, unfinished life, and childlike spirit of the victim, who fell prey to domestic violence. The title, "My Father is an Angel, the Angel of Death," with its bitter irony, highlights the grim reality that the person meant to protect life became the agent of death. This work aims to remind us of human tragedies and reflect on the silent and unjust repetition of domestic violence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Romina_Ashrafi

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
