The poster reflects the severe struggles faced by women and children, particularly in war-torn regions of Africa. In these areas, violence has become a pervasive force, disrupting lives and creating profound trauma. The girl in the poster embodies the countless children who suffer from the ravages of conflict, where innocent lives are torn apart by violence. Children in these regions often experience displacement, loss of family, and severe psychological trauma. The illustration underscores the particular vulnerability of young girls, who face not only the immediate dangers of conflict but also the long-term consequences of violence, such as forced displacement, abuse, and neglect. The blood-tears in the poster symbolize not only physical injury but also the emotional scars that such violence leaves behind. By using this poignant imagery, the poster calls for a global reckoning with the reality of violence against women and children in wartime Africa, urging viewers to confront and address this grave injustice. It seeks to inspire empathy, raise awareness, and advocate for meaningful action to end the suffering and support the healing of those affected.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
