"The Weight of Silence" visually captures the oppressive nature of unspoken truths and ignored cries for help. In this design, a solitary silhouette of a woman stands beneath an enormous, imposing red block labeled "Silence." The rough, hand-painted texture of the block symbolizes the heavy, destructive force that societal silence exerts on women suffering from violence. The stark contrast between the black silhouette and the fiery red block emphasizes the overwhelming burden of this silence.
The simplicity of the composition, with its bold lines and deliberate use of negative space, draws attention to the central theme: the crushing effect of silence in the face of violence against women. The red block, almost aggressive in its size and texture, looms over the figure, representing the way silence can overshadow, stifle, and ultimately crush the spirit and identity of those it targets.
This poster calls for a break from the silence that allows violence to continue unchecked. It urges viewers to recognize that silence is not neutral but an active force that can perpetuate harm. By highlighting this truth, "The Weight of Silence" advocates for speaking out, raising awareness, and taking action to support women who suffer in silence. The design is both a visual and a symbolic representation of the urgent need to lift the oppressive weight of silence and replace it with voices of support, understanding, and change.

Stop killing women
According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
