My concept was to use a simple, voluminous and striking typography to write "WOMEN". The black of the M, E, and N letters stands for gravity, danger, and oppression, while the white of the W and O letters indicates purity and light, signifying women and their wish to live in peace and security. The colours visually depict how the words "Men" and "Women" are combined, signifying the existence and impact of males in the lives of women. To emphasize this idea, I replaced the "O" of "WOMEN" with a handcuff to the "M" of the "MEN". This handcuff is a symbol of the brutality, authority, and dominance that men have over women. The poster's red backdrop alludes to violence, peril, death, and blood, serving as a sobering reminder of the seriousness of the issue and the lethal effects of domestic abuse. To draw attention and encourage thought about the significance of what is being seen, I set out to create a straightforward yet visually arresting design.

Stop killing women

According to UN Women, 2022 was the year in which the most women were intentionally murdered to date: nearly 89,000. Of these ‘Around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members (including fathers, mothers, uncles and brothers). This means that, on average, more than 133 women or girls are killed every day by someone in their own family.’
If it’s not bad enough that femicide is increasing, the real statistic is probably much higher: ‘for roughly four in ten intentional murders of women and girls, there is not enough information to identify them as gender-related killings because of national variation in criminal justice recording and investigation practices’.
This must change. So this year, we want to ask your help in drawing attention to all forms of violence against women: for the world to stop killing women.
