Due to climate change, intensive agriculture, pesticides, and habitat destruction, one of the most important pollinators on Earth--the bees--are fighting an uphill battle to maintain populations. Not just bees, but many other important pollinators also face troubles because of these factors: "hoverflies, bats, birds, beetles and more, are involved in the pollination of 90% of the world’s flowering plants." (dw.com article). If we don't take responsibility for protecting our global pollinators, especially the wild ones, communities dependent on flowering crops and those of us who just... like fruits and vegetables could face a shortage or extinction of flowering species.
Thus, I decided to make a fun poster meant to exhibit the importance and power of bees and other pollinators. Based on many childhood favorites involving giant robots/mechs, I tried to tap into a fun comic book vibe so that it could relate to kids as well as an ever-growing nerdy adult population. My Mecha-Bee is quite large, but he isn't supposed to be frightening; like real bees, he's supposed to be cute. The apocalyptic smog that surrounds him, despite his and the flowers' bright colors, is meant to imply the threat that we pose to his kind. Even though pollinators are powerful and important, they are vulnerable and need our support.

Do The Right Thing

In a world that is becoming increasingly polarised, perhaps the one thing that unites us all is the conviction that we are all acting for the right reasons. And having formed an opinion about an issue, there is little room to have it changed by listening to an opposing view. Fake news has eroded trust in facts. So how can we move forward?
