Going back to what occurred to a simple Wits student and the current status in America, this poster comes out as a powerful way of manipulating an American expectation of promises and lies into a nightmare, and creating awareness that there is more behind this country, behind this flag and there are people trying to break out, but they can’t.
The image is of a Muslim student at college, relating back to Laeeqa and also representing her religion, her beliefs. The way I have represented her religion and belief is with the Hijab. The Flag only reveals her eyes, as does the Hijab, leading directly to the reference of the belief to keep oneself concealed from the public eye. Referring back to the shatter effect or the break effect in the flag, it represents the brokenness of the country and it’s laws and government and trying to reveal its effects to the public eye. What initially works is taking a profile photo of a Muslim woman or girl which on its own is nothing but a casual photo but then place the American flag on top of it, because America influences and impacts these people, they are then no longer seen. To add to this is the break effect, revealing the girl behind the flag, showing that she exists but she is held behind by this mask, this flag. Her hijab is no longer represented by her religion but by what America has restricted her to. This is why only her eyes peer out from the flag. The rest of the broken effects ties in with the broken image of America, distorting the visual people believe which is that there is an American Dream. Meanwhile, the only thing which is evident is people who are living the American Nightmare.
