The background color yellow gives an energetic and vital perception, which is the exact opposite of the character. The whole picture is a binary opposition: the man is dead, yet not dead; he is standing, yet not standing; his head is where it's supposed to be, yet not quite the way it should be. The only element without a counterpart is the shackle, which is the core of the problem: confinement. The man is deprived of Freedom. Freedom defines humanity. Without freedom, a man is a "man", yet not quite a man.
