The message of this poster is complex. Primarily, it is a criticism of our current economic system that transforms man into a working animal, working like a "machine". However, the poster is not only critiquing the need for people to work harder in order to maintain the rate of economic growth, but also the manner in which higher human values have been replaced by greater concern for wealth and monetary gain.
The working animal is illustrated as an ant, chosen because of its ambitiousness and capability of carrying a load that far exceeds its own body weight. Animals are not thought to possess the same level of moral and ethical thinking as humans and thus, the metamorphosis of man into an invertebrate symbolises how the system or man within the system is driven to neglect moral values. The coin symbolises not only money but also a load that comes with the necessity to meet the economic requirements.
Step by step, man ‘devolves’ into an ant (working animal) while there is a concomitant decline in social justice. This is symbolised by scales (a symbol for justice) being carried by the human which subsequently changes into a coin . The graph and devolving man, regressing back into an animal, underlines this point. This transformation not only takes place on a personal or individual level, meaning that the individual comes to place greater value on money, but also on a systemic and society-wide level. The systemic level is represented by the coordinate system which frames the human development, showing that the economic system and the need of growth is the main cause for this trend. The gap between poor and rich is widening at an increasing rate as economic growth also escalates. This is expedient for the maintenance of our economic system. The wealth of the richest 85% of people in the world is equivalent to the wealth of the whole of the rest of the world.
The inverse colours in the poster highlight the transformation and the difference between man, proudly carrying his values and development to a heavily burdened insect, unconsciously working for the system.
How could it have gone so far?
