A good urbanism is not a matter of numbers and building rates. Renzo Piano once said that if it was only a matter of building density, Venice it would be the greatest speculation of the history. Contrariwise it is a masterpiece, proof that the medieval city had already given us a good example of how the city can grow livable and pleasant although overcrowding and high density. But the component of self-construction, the participation of the population in the project, is crucial. A crowded city can be the crib of civilization: we love each other as part of a larger Whole even within (wellthought) anthills. oooooṃ sweet ooooooooooṃ

Poster for tomorrow's 5th annual call for entries, campaigning for the universal right to housing.
‘Home’ means something different to all of us. The place where we grew up, the place where we live at the moment, the place we come to relax or entertain our friends. But for far too many people home remains a distant dream, as they try to eke out an existence in sub-standard accommodation or sleep rough on the streets.
