Waterborne diseases are caused by pathogens that are transmitted through contaminated fresh water. Infection can be acquired during a shower, washing, drinking, preparing food or eating food that has been in contact with contaminated water. The most common of these manifestations is diarrhea, affecting more children in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, these illnesses account for an estimated 4.1% of the total global burden of disease, and cause about 1.8 million human deaths annually.
